A style scape collects the colors, materials, shapes and images that define one visual direction, so a team can agree on it before making anything. It works when each cluster of references has a short line that says what to take from it, and when the page separates what is in the direction from what is out. Keep the set tight enough that the direction is clear within the first screen.
Group references by the attribute they carry, not by where they came from. A reviewer can then say yes to the material cluster and no to the form cluster, which is hard to do with one pile of pictures.
Each cluster gets a line that says what the team takes from it, such as matte stone for the surface, not glossy metal. The line is the instruction. The pictures are the evidence for it.
Name the colors, materials and forms the direction excludes. Writing the exclusions down stops the wider reference set from drifting back in during the next round.
Up to five uploads or Unsplash picks can appear on the page. Put one image into each of the most important clusters, and describe the remaining references in words. Content Creator does not edit images, so crop and color-correct references in your own tools before you upload them.
Weak: Earthy tones.
Strong: Ochre, clay and warm gray. Ochre for accents, clay for large fields, warm gray for text backgrounds.
Earthy describes a family of colors that each reviewer reads differently. Names, roles and an order of use give the next designer something to match.
Weak: Natural materials.
Strong: In: unfinished oak and wool bouclé. Out: lacquer, chrome and any visible printed pattern.
The strong version says what is in and what is out, so the material cluster can be checked at review.
Weak: Modern shapes.
Strong: Cards use the soft corner radius from the spec. No circular frames, and no sharp corners on cards.
Modern names a period. A radius rule names a shape someone can build.
Weak: A sophisticated finish.
Strong: Matte, low-sheen surfaces with no gradients. Highlights appear only where a light source is visible in the reference.
Sophisticated is a judgment. The finish rule says what is allowed and where it applies.
Send the style scape to the team that will apply it through a team link. Ask them to test it on one real layout before the direction is approved.
Use a public link for a client or partner after internal review. Take out any internal reference source that you cannot show outside the team.
Use the WhatsApp share button to send the direction to a freelancer who needs it today. Add one line naming the cluster the work starts with.
Grouping references by where they came from tells the reader nothing about the look. Group by color, material, form and finish.
Without an out list, the next round of references drifts back toward whatever was rejected. Write the exclusions down with the inclusions.
A page with three directions gets three half-approved answers. Keep one direction per page, and make a second page for an alternative.
Words such as bold, calm or refined leave room for each reviewer to imagine something different. Replace them with a color, a material or a limit.
This page does not provide a template. Use the four clusters and the out list as the structure, then fill them with references that carry your direction. A style scape built from your own references is easier to review than a generic layout.
A mood board gathers images to suggest a feeling. A style scape is more structured: it separates the direction into attributes, with an instruction line for each and an explicit list of what is out. Agree the feeling with a mood board, then agree the rules with a style scape.
